Women & Computer Science
Women & Computer Science
Duration – 8:37

Earlier this year, we heard that high school women made up only a small percentage of AP Computer Science test-takers, and that in two states no women at all took the test in 2013. That wasn’t the case in Michigan. In our state, 15% of test-takers were young women. And in our area, quite a lot of young women are involved in computer science, especially at the Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center. K-12 360 sat down with three guests from KAMSC to talk about women and computer science. Dhara Patel, Class of 2014, is a KAMSC Code Warrior. Reinie Thomas, Class of 2013, received the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) National Aspirations Award. And Shannon Houtrouw teaches computer science at KAMSC. He took six computer science teams made up of only young women to a Michigan State University competition this spring. Out of fifteen teams, they placed 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 9th.
