Farmers markets in the summer are a regular part of many of our lives. Wandering booth to booth picking up fresh produce, meat, cheeses, even handmade crafts. Once the fall and winter move in, we usually have to curtail our visits, but several local sites are giving area farmers, and customers, a chance to find fresh seasonal products even when snow is in the air.

Area residents know well the line: If you don’t like the weather in Michigan, wait 5 minutes. It’s wonderful when the weather turns good, but there are safety concerns when it turns bad. We checked in with the head of the American Red Cross of the Greater Kalamazoo Area for some safety tips as we make our way through the frosty months.

The Kalamazoo Area Building Authority, or KABA, came into being a few months back when three townships decided to join together to deal with an imploding construction industry. Since key employees were heading out the door to retirement, Comstock, Kalamazoo and Oshtemo townships decided to join together to create an entity to deal with the construction downturn and its expected rebound. Already, another township, Cooper, has joined in.
